Westie Ornaments

Our interest in Westies is reflected in the crafts we enjoy decorating our home with. We are always looking for new ideas and materials to work with.

Last fall one of my third grade students brought me a pumpkin pin she had made from yarn and plastic needle point canvas. I brought it home to show my sister who is an elementary art teacher. Within the week she had taken the idea and adapted it into Westie ornaments.

The ornaments are needle pointed yarn on a plastic canvas. The plastic canvas can be obtained at a craft store in 9x12 sheets.

Using scissors and the pattern I made as a guide we cut out two Westies from the plastic canvas.

We followed the stitch guide using longer stitches to show furnishings and short ones to show the stripped areas. To give the ornament more substance two Westies are needed, one facing left and one facing right. When both Westies are completed whip edges together with yarn to form one ornament. A bow and jingle bell can be added for decoration.

For other breeds of dogs find a profile picture of the breed you wish to make. Carefully cut out the picture and trace around it on graph paper. Square out and adjust edges until the dog looks correct. The dog may be enlarged or reduced by the gauge of the graph paper used.

Our Christmas tree has about sixty-five breeds of dogs represented on it. Copies of these ornaments make great little gifts. The ornaments and patterns can also be adapted to create a crocheted granny square, a key chain charm, refrigerator magnets, tissue box cover, or used to decorate other household objects that a Westie will surely brighten.
