Dafé Brudäjo

Jan 9, 1998 Caffè Lena
The name is odd. It's like Hagen Daas - made-up but sounds meaningful. (I'm told that it was constructed from the names of the individual members)
The sound of the name is vaguely latin.  What a red herring.  These guys aren't latin, though they use conga drums.  It's misleading to dwell on the instruments - like the alto sax and mandolin.
These folks are wonderful.  There entire sound is smooth as silk, their harmonies crisp and their rhythms richly engaging. Ferrilyn's voice is reminisent of Billy Holiday and Tracy Chapman - a bit more accessible I'd say.  Wow.  The standards they do as well as the original works of Bruce Wheat are all performed with an energy and ease that at once  gathers your interest and puts you at a most pleasant place.

Jan 9, 1998 was a hellofa night at Caffè Lena. What a find. I wish that I had known how good these folks were so I could have invited all my friends.  Next time I will.  The night was great for me and the rest of the audience. Unfortuneately the audience was smaller than expected because they are not so well known around here and our weather was threating ice storms; there were many canceled reservations.  This group needs to be seen, they deserve it and we deserve more of them.

Not only was it  a treat to hear them but they were personally delightful.  They were calm, personable, professional, and had a good sense of humor as we setup their complex array of instruments on the small stage in a hurry.  And, to top it all, they donated their fee to the Caffè. Turbo mega WOW.

Go see them.

PS they are: Bruce Wheat, David Fowl, Josh Kleederman, David Norman & Ferrilyn Sourdiffe.
(Ferrilyn has less hair than in this picture and Bruce has a bit more)
