New York Office records: Authorization to publish must be obtained from: President, American Adademy in Rome, 41 East 65th Street, New York, N.Y. 10021. Art school; Rome, Italy. Organized in 1894 as the American School of Architecture in Rome. In 1897 it was dissolved and its assets turned over to the new American Adademy in Rome, not a traditional school, but a place where architects, painters and sculptors could work in close association. Primarily records of the Academy's New York office (60 ft.), where the president, secretary, treasurer, trustees and special committees functioned, funds raised, fellows chosen, and other functions performed. Also included are records of the Rome office, 1912-1931 (2 ft.), consisting mainly of administrative correspondence of Gorham Stevens, the Director of the School of Fine Art, and Stevens' personal papers (0.5 ft.).

Arnold turned to painting and printmaking after 3 decades of teaching music. Her work is in the Hard-Edge tradition. Biographical documents, correspondence, notes, scattered business records, art work, photographs, video interviews, and printed material. Correspondence, photographs, exhibition announcements and catalogs, and clippings. John Cranch papers, 1831-1892. 8 items (on 2 partial microfilm reels)
Patrons must use microfilm copy. Portrait painter; Washington, D.C. and Urbana, Ohio. A journal; watercolor and pencil sketches; and a photograph. REEL 3569: A handwritten copy, ca. 1892, of a journal kept by John Cranch from 1831 to 1833 while studying in Italy. The journal contains descriptions of Italian art, architecture and scenery, an account of Cranch's physical and emotional state of health and his drawing and painting activities, and annotated pencil sketches. The journal was hand copied by Cranch's wife, Charlotte.

Memoirs of the baths of Diocletian : or memoirs of a southern veteran by Moses Jacob Ezekiel. 656 p. (on partial microfilm reel)
Patrons must use microfilm copy. Sculptor, Rome, Italy. Born in Richmond, Va., of a Sephardic Jewish family, Ezekiel went to Berlin to study at the Royal Art Academy, and he met with great success, winning a prize that allowed him to study in Rome, where he resided permanently. James E. Freeman letters to W. D. Pickman, 1848-1849. 4 items (on partial microfilm reel)

Settled permanently in Italy, serving as the U.S. consul at Ancona and residing in Rome. Freeman from Rome, Italy, to Pickman of Salem, Massachusetts, discussing Freeman's work in obtaining Italian paintings for Pickman. Powers' international success due to his work "Greek Slave," established him as the leading American sculptor of his day. Correspondence; biographical sketches and data; financial material; writings; autograph and sketch album; sketches; floor plans; patents and contracts for inventions; photographs; clippings; printed material; a photograph album; and miscellaneous material.

Best known for OUR LADY OF FATIMA in Portugal, portraying an apparition of the Virgin Mary as three children of Fatima saw her in 1917. College of Letters and Science, Classics, General Files, GRANT SHOWERMAN (1.66 cubic feet)
Grant Showerman, UW prof. of Classics was a Fellow at the American School of Classical Studies in Rome, 1898-00. The collection includes his University work and his writings, as well as "Prof. Showerman's account of an interview with Benito Mussolini in which Prof. Showerman presented a copy of his book, *Rome and the Romans.* There are also newspaper clippings concerning Prof. Showerman accepting an award from the Italian government." Unfortunately, most of the correspondence is incoming without Showerman's replies.
