Federal Budget
The last Clinton budget will have a huge impact on Public Employees in New York State:
Education
The budget has additional money for disadvantaged students, special education and class size reduction.
Health
Hospitals, Nursing Homes, Home Care Agencies will receive increased funding through Medicare.
Social Services
Funding for Head Start and the Child Care and Development Block Grant funding is increased to allow more children to participate.
Labor
Funding for Unemployment Insurance programs and One Stop Centers is increased.
Transportation
Programs that provide financial aid to State transportation programs are increased.
NY Congresswomen honored
Nita Lowey (NY-D) becomes the 1st women to chair the Democratic Campaign Committee. Ms. Lowey will be responsible for fundraising and strategic planning for Democratic House members.
Bush Cabinet Nominee No Friend of Labor
President-Elect George W. Bush nominated Tommy Thompson for the Secretary of Health and Human Services. Tommy Thompson, Governor of Wisconsin, oversaw the nationÕs toughest welfare-to-work program and supports the Federal government granting waivers to states, opening up the door to privatization.
He is considered a strong voice for conservatives.
Labor Victory
Linda Chavez was one of President-Elect BushÕs first nominations, to serve as Secretary of Labor. She served under Ronald Reagan, opposes affirmative action and supports school vouchers.
Many groups, including labor organizations opposed her nomination, which was withdrawn.
