SEA KAYAKING? IN UPSTATE NEW
YORK?!?
The sea kayak of wooden frame and animal
skin was developed by northern peoples, over many millennia,
as an ergonomic tool of survival for hunting on the open
sea. Contemporary versions in plastic or composite have
proven durable and user friendly boats for recreation. The
same characteristics which allow traditional designs to move
quietly through the water, and yet also cope with sometimes
turbulent seas, enable the recreational user to safely and
efficiently paddle a wide variety of waters. A kayak's
ability to float in a just a few inches of water makes it
ideal for exploring shallow and quiet marshlands, closely
observing wildlife. Its efficient hull, protected deck, and
maneuverability serve well in protected lakes and coastal
areas, as well as on larger bodies of water where wind and
wave conditions might overwhelm other human powered craft.
All this comes while providing a unique perspective for the
paddler. Seated low in a kayak, the paddler is cradled by
the water with eyes hardly two feet above water level,
giving a view uncommon to any other craft.
Opportunities to enjoy kayaking in the
Capital District and Upstate are many and varied. One can
take a quiet afternoon paddle locally on the Hudson, Mohawk,
or Hoosic Rivers, make a more extended day trip along the
Hudson River, southern Lake Champlain, or an Adirondack
lake. If you try a camping or day trip among the islands of
Lake George, you will enjoy rocky shores and clear water
reminiscent of coastal Maine.
