Item B-14, below

Welcome to Catalog #32!                    Updated Dec 27, 2007

We don't have the prettiest website in the world, we're working on that, but perhaps this site has the largest collection of  Primitive aviation and LTA books anywhere on the web for offer
In this edition, you'll notice we're focusing on books, as the memorabilia goes out quickly. There are additional things not listed here, however - altimeters and barographs, prints and other goodies in stock. And, balloon mail becomes an increasing focus of ours as we work to increase interest in this collecting genre. Amongst other virtues, it takes up much less space than books!
We have seen some flown covers, quite familiar to us over the years, spike for surprisingly high prices at auctions; Matthew Bennett auctions in Baltimore had a 1922 flown Gordon Bennett post card addressed to Honeywell, flown aboard a US entry, go for several hundred dollars. And some turn of the 20th century balloon drop mail from European countries went for several hundred a piece as well. So, it might not get cheaper to collect, but covers from that period which are flown seem to be doing well in the market.
Zeppelin philately seems to be finally going back up, with the more obscure destinations or markings escalating at a higher rate than other zeppelin covers, in price; the different in magnitude is increasing. We've not seen as much quality memorabilia this past year, but ephemera (mostly at auction from larger collections) brings premiums, as these items can be displayed in philately exhibits - menus, tickets, wine cards, etc.
   See item #53!
And please pardon any typos which we missed. Our mantra seems to be, if you don't see it here, please ask. Humble as it is, we hope you enjoy what it here!
                        Maureen and Chris Lynch

2-120. Cameron, Don. Ballooning Handbook. London, 1980. 174 pp., indexed, ill., biblio, appendices. Some highlighting, else Fine in DJ.
Long out of print, highly sought after, this volume has a lot of info not covered in other ballooning books - details of different types of stitches and seams in construction, ballooning law (as it is in the UK),  advanced flying techniques, micrometeorology and airflow at ground level, fuel consumption and weight charts, etc. Some highlights and notations within show this copy has been used already, but otherwise perfectly good copy for use.             $35

2-121. Original Tissandier Manuscript, pertaining to the Electrical Airship of 1881. 3 sheets, A4 size, in Gaston Tissandier's hand outlining the expenditures and original subscription contributions of those founding participants in the "Societe des Aerostats Dirigeables."  The top notation indicates that the original subscription was for 100,000 FF, divided into 20 parts of 5,000 FF each. Those who had subscribed as of Dec. 9, 1881 are listed (8 original subscribers), and the intentions/goals of the Society, where/when they intended to operate, etc. This looks like a prelimenary report for a meeting. Expenditures from June 9 to mid-September also also given, the biggest one being the envelope for the airship (perhaps a model?) for 200 FF to M. LaChambre, and another for 290 FF, as well as what looks like travel expenses for someone for 405 FF, etc. Pages slightly chipped/worn around some edges, slightly browned, but on the whole perfectly intact, in plastic sleeves for handling.
A most amazing item, surprising that it found its way out of the country considering what it is; highly significant manuscript of what was the project the Tissandiers were likely best known for; their electrical airship, which enjoyed some success. Acquired in Paris some years ago, this is from the original Tissandier collection. All in Gaston Tissandier's hand. Extremely Rare material.  $800
