A LIST OF OUR CHOICE CANOE TRIPS

The Raquette River
The Raquette River can be paddled as a day trip or it can be a multi day journey. From Long Lake to Tupper Lake the Raquette wanders a distance of 44 miles. It is basically a flat water trip, with a one mile portage around Raquette Falls. There are a variety of animals near the river including: coyotes, white tailed deer, bears, beaver. Fishing is generally pretty good along the route with perch, bass, and trout. This is an excellent family trip with something for everyone. As a day trip, you can paddle 8-20 miles by adding Stony Creek Ponds as a side trip.
The Bog River/Low's Lake
The Bog River area is noted for its rugged scenery and also for its abundance of loons. The overall trip can be 7-18 miles with 0-4 portages. There is a floating bog island tthat will be of interest to naturalists. Designated campsites insure that you don't feel crowded. I have gone into that area during May and not seen a living soul for three days. The area is best visited from early May to Mid June and after Labor Day weekend. This is a flat water trip. There is excellent small mouth fishing on Hitchins Pond along the Bog River. Large Groups Please Note- The Department of Environmental Conservation will not write group camping permits for this area!
The Fulton Chain
This is a classic canoe trip that traces its roots back to the travels of the early fur traders and the native americans. The trip begins in Old Forge and continues to either Saranac Lake or Tupper Lake. The approximate distance is 90 miles, and it takes 5-10 days. There are numerous portages, which emphasize the need for a very light canoe. This is a combination of lake and river paddling, which makes the trip interesting. A real challenge for those wishing to test their paddling abilities!

HINTS FOR A HASSLE FREE TRIP!

Camping permits are required for any group of ten or more, or for any group staying in the same location for four or more nights. The permits are free of charge, and they sould be obtained from the N.Y.S. Forest Ranger in the area in which you will enter state lands. Large groups are limited to 12 people in order to protect the designated camping sites along the waterways.

We encourage the use of designated campsites along all the major canoe routes. If you choose to not use a designated site, you must camp at least 150 feet from water, roads, and trails.

Please disturb as little ground cover as possible near your campsite. Use low impact camping techniques.

Do not drink any untreated water. Do not wash in any stream, pond, or lake. Dispose of waste water at least 150 feet from any water source.

Please use the outhouse, if one is provided at the campsite. Otherwise, dig a narrow trench 8-12 inches deep and cover it completely when you break camp. Toilet paper should be burned after each latrine use. Trench latrines should be a minimum of 150 feet from any water source.

Please use portable backpacking stoves for cooking whenever possible. Use only down and dead wood for camp fires. Please thoroughly extinguish all fires when leaving the campsite, our friends would really appreciate that!

Lightweight canoes are your best bet if you're facing any long portages. We offer lightweight canoes in carbon fiber, cedar strip, and kevlar. A two person carbon fiber canoe weighs about 32 pounds, and a similar boat in cedar weighs around 42 pounds. A similar canoe in fiberglass weighs around 65 pounds, and in plastic 60-85 pounds depending upon the type of plastic. The lighter the boat, the more it will cost to purchase or to rent.
